Degree students planning to
enroll in courses can register by calling the Interactive
Voice Response (IVR) System (207-581-6246). Students
admitted to UMaine can register
online or by completing a registration form at the
Summer University Office in Chadbourne Hall or call 207-581-3143.
|
| Print copies of the Summer University Course
guide and registration forms are available by mail at
124 Chadbourne Hall, University of Maine, Orono, Maine
04469 or phone 581-3143. University of Maine degree students
must obtain the approval of their advisors before they
can register. |
Maine State Law (22-MRSA & 6359) requires all students
born after 1956 to furnish proof of immunization against measles,
rubella, tetanus and diphtheria if they are either in a degree
program or are registered full-time. Send a photocopy of immunizations,
signed by a health official, to the Cutler Health Center.
If proof of immunization is not provided, students will be
unable to register for classes.
Courses in the Summer University may be taken on a grade, pass/fail
or audit basis. Pass/fail courses carry degree credit but are
not calculated into the grade point average. With an audit registration,
the student participates in class work similar to a student
registered for credit but is not required to prepare reports
or take examinations. Degree students should check with their
advisors before registering for any course on a pass/fail or
audit basis.
Adding a Course During May Term & Summer University
Students may not add a new course after the second class has
met. This policy is strictly enforced because of the abbreviated summer
schedules.
THE DATE A COURSE IS DROPPED DURING MAY TERM & Summer University DICTATES
BOTH:
A. Academic Penalties
During the first third of a course, a student may drop a course
without academic penalty. (See "Dropping a Course" section below.)
During the second third of the course, a student passing a
course may drop it without penalty provided the student’s advisor
and dean approve. Courses dropped will show on the student’s academic
record, with a grade of "W." The grade will not be computed into
the semester average. During the final third of a course, any courses dropped
will normally carry a grade of "F," unless extenuating circumstances
prevail. The grade will show on the student’s academic record and
will be computed into the semester average. Students withdrawing from a
course during the second or final third of the course are required to complete
a Late Schedule Change Form available in the Summer University
Office. Late Schedule Change Forms require the signature of the instructor,
the student’s
advisor, and Dean of the College prior to their being submitted
to the Summer University Office.
Dropping a Course During May Term & Summer University
Dropping a course for which registration has been completed
must be done by completing a "drop" form or by calling the Summer
University Office at 581-3143. Add-drop forms are available
in the Summer University Office, 124 Chadbourne Hall.
Degree students may drop a course via IVR (207-581-6246)
& Web DSIS. Registrations are not automatically canceled
when a student fails to attend and does not officially notify
the Summer University Office. Informing faculty that you are
dropping a course is not an official withdrawal.
B.
Financial Penalties
May Term and Summer University drops for refunds must be made
on the first day of class. No refunds will be issued after
this date.
One three-credit course in a three-week session, or two three-credit
courses in a six-week session is considered a maximum registration.
It is possible to enroll in multiple courses in
different sessions providing there are no time conflicts.
Undergraduates who show an unusually good scholastic record
on the basis of previous work, may secure permission to elect
hours above the ordinary maximum registration.
Audit/Pass Fail/Credit Hours
Once a student is registered for a course, changes may be made
within a specified time. For example, changes in registration
may be made prior to the third class of a three- or eight-week
session and prior to the fourth day of five- and six-week courses.
This applies to a change from audit or pass/fail to a credit
basis, or vice versa. Changes are made on a schedule change
(Add-Drop) form which may be obtained at the Summer University
Office in Chadbourne Hall or by calling 581-3143. Degree students
may make changes via IVR (207-581-6246).
Students who desire printed grade reports may print them at
any computer cluster using DSIS, or request them from the
IVR system, 207-581-6246. Requests for academic transcripts
should be directed to the Office of Student Records, 5781 Wingate
Hall, Room 100, Orono, ME 04469-5781. All requests must be
in writing and signed by the student. There is no fee for an
official transcript. Transcript requests are required to have grades
sent to state department of education, school superintendents
or employers. Call 207-581-1288 for more information. No partial transcripts
are issued and only University of Maine transcripts are issued.
University policy prohibits issuing official transcript(s)
to any student indebted to the University.
Students who must have evidence of course completion prior
to the issuance of grade reports may obtain a statement of
summer work from the Office of Student Records, Wingate Hall,
Room 100, 207-581-1288.

Grading System Symbols on grade reports and transcripts are
as follows:
A Superior
ACC Acceptable (graduate thesis only)
B Good
C Satisfactory
D Poor
DG Deferred Grade (for multiple-semester course)
F Failure
F* Failed (for pass/fail courses; not included in GPA)
AU Audited
I Incomplete Work
L Stopped Attending/Never Attended (computed as an
"F")
LP - Low Pass (Passed on the P/F grading option with a D+,D, or D-)
MG Missing Grade (no grade submitted by instructor)
P Passed (for pass/fail course) -with a "C" or above
R Deferred (graduate thesis only)
T Deferred (undergraduate thesis only)
W Withdrew Passing
F Withdrew Failing (computed as an "F")
*The number of semester hours completed with a grade of A
is multiplied by 4, B+ by 3.33, C- by 1.67, etc. This computation
is carried to two decimal places for each course. These results
are added and this total is divided by the total number of
semester hours (including courses with a grade of F). The
result will show the semester average which is carried to
two decimal places.
