Robert Kennedy
President,
The University
of Maine |
Dear Friend:
Each year, more and
more people choose to take advantage of UMaine's
Summer University to study at a comprehensive state
university located in an idyllic setting along
the banks of the Stillwater River. That is no
surprise, considering all that the state of Maine
and the University of Maine have to offer during
the summer months. At UMaine, we are indeed proud
that our Summer University has grown to the point
where we offer more than 600 outstanding courses
and interesting special programs.
It is particularly exciting and noteworthy that state-of-the-art
distance learning technology makes our courses available
to students literally anywhere in the world.
Summer is an exciting time in Maine and at UMaine.
The campus, which is Maine's largest residential university,
is alive with activity all through the summer. Our
distinguished faculty members, many of whom are recognized
as international leaders in their fields of study,
lead the way through their ongoing teaching and research
activities. Students, staff members and visitors combine
to make up a vibrant summertime community.
UMaine is the state's land-grant university, and its
diverse summer course offerings reflect the
comprehensive nature of its teaching, research and
public engagement activities. If you have a particular
interest or academic need, I believe that your best
chance of finding a challenging and rewarding summer
academic experience in Maine is at the University
of Maine.
Located in Orono, near the center of the state, UMaine
provides easy access to an extraordinary variety of
outdoor activities. Mt. Desert Island, home to Bar
Harbor and Acadia National Park, is only about an
hour away. Baxter State Park, which features Mt. Katahdin
(the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail),
is about the same distance to the north. In addition
to those well-known destinations, Maine's rocky coast
and breathtaking North Woods provide innumerable recreation
activities.
For those interested in other types of activities,
the City of Bangor is only 10 minutes away, and Portland
is a two-hour drive.
And there is no better place to enjoy pleasant summer
days and nights than this spectacular part of Maine.
We are very proud of our campus and of all that we
offer academically, socially and recreationally. On
campus and off, summer in Maine is an unforgettable
experience. Join us for Summer University 2008.
Sincerely,

Robert A. Kennedy
President
