Graduate
work has been available at the University of Maine for many
years. The first master’s degree was conferred in 1881;
the first doctoral degree in 1960. Since 1923, graduate work
has been a separate division at UMaine. Today the master's degree
is offered in over 60 areas of study and the doctorate in 25
areas.The Dean and Associate Provost for Graduate Studies has
primary responsibility for administering the policies and procedures
relating to graduate study. Graduate School policy is made by
the Graduate Faculty, acting through its representative body,
the Graduate Board.
Graduate work in Maine is concentrated at
two of the seven units of the University of Maine System:
the flagship campus of the University of Maine in Orono, and
the University of Southern Maine. University of Maine graduate
courses are offered on other campuses on a selected basis.
Graduate programs now available on a part-time
basis at other campuses are the Master of Public Administration
(Augusta area), and the Master of Science in Electrical Engineering.
The College of Education and Human Development offers an individually
designed Master of Education in elementary, middle or secondary
teaching at several outreach centers in the state. For information

Currently, over 2200 graduate students are enrolled in the
Graduate School. A list of degree programs follows at the
end of this information. Students may also study at the graduate
level as non-degree students. Graduate program information,

Admission to the Graduate
School must be secured before the student will be allowed
to register for graduate degree credit. A completed application
for admission consists of the Graduate Schools application
form and non-refundable application fee, three letters of
recommendation, official transcripts of all college work
and the appropriate test scores (Graduate Record Exam,
Graduate Management Admission Test or the Miller Analogies
Test). The suggested deadline for applications is January 15 for
the following fall, or eight weeks before classes begin
in the spring or Summer Universitys. Application materials
are non-returnable.
Students may apply to a regular degree program, a graduate
certificate program, or as graduate non-degree students. Non-degree
status is for those students with a Bachelors degree
who have not yet decided upon a field of study. Up to twelve
credits of certificate or non-degree graduate credit may be
transferred into a degree program if the courses are applicable
to the students program of study, and are within the
time limit established by the Graduate School.
Registration for graduate credit in 500- and 600-level courses
is restricted to students admitted to graduate degree, graduate
certificate, or non-degree status. Matriculated students in
good standing enrolled in other graduate schools may take
graduate courses at the University of Maine if they have applied
for Graduate non-degree status with the University of Maines
Graduate School. The form is available from the Graduate School,
Winslow hall. The instructor of the course is the final authority
judging qualifications of a student to take a particular course.
In the case of 600-level Business courses, registration approval
is required from the Director of the MBA program in the Maine
Business School. The approval process requires providing GMAT
scores and official transcripts with an application to the
Graduate School.
