The program at a glance

An opportunity for part-time students

The University Studies program is designed specifically and solely for highly motivated part- time students (1-11 credit hours) who would like to pursue an individually-planned degree program.
This individually-planned degree is particularly attractive to a variety of people: busy adults who can only manage a part-time flexible approach to a college degree; students interested in applying credits earned from other programs and institutions; and associate degree holders wishing to proceed to a baccalaureate degree with maximum transfer of their work completed.
The Bachelor of University Studies Degree does not duplicate or replicate any of the University of Maine's current programs of study. This degree differs in two major respects from traditional B.A. and B.S. degrees. First, it is offered only through the Continuing Education Division for those who can attend the University of Maine on a part-time basis. Secondly, each student consults with an academic advisor to design an individualized program leading to the student's educational goals.
This degree is designed to be flexible and adaptable to the needs of the individual student.
Courses generally reflect the student's academic experiences and interests, ensuring an interdisciplinary course of study. The University Studies program is an appropriate alternative for those students who choose not to commit to a single academic area or major.
With a carefully designed course of study, a University Studies student may pursue a number of academic interests. This flexibility allows each student to eventually pursue a variety of career opportunities.

University Studies is my choice for a baccalaureate degree. The flexibility of the program is going to fit my busy home and work schedule and active lifestyle. Being able to work toward a goal one semester at a time will benefit me.

The University Studies Program is the perfect degree program for me, considering my circumstances. I have a full-time job in my area of career interest which has variable work schedule. If I were to leave my job to attend school in the traditional manner, I would lose a position that I have worked very hard to achieve. My family and work obligations only permit me to pursue a degree on a part-time basis. The University Studies degree program allows me to fulfill my educational aspirations as well as meet my family and work commitments

Planning your program
Each student meets with a University Studies advisor to create an individualized program that incorporates the student's personal and professional goals. As part of your program, you will need to meet the University's general education requirements as described below.
Once the student and advisor determine an academic direction for the student to pursue, a series of objectives are established that become part of the student's written "degree plan." This plan acts as a guide for the student as he or she progresses through the program. The plan may be amended or redirected at any point in the student's education.

General Education Requirements

All students initiating a baccalaureate program at the University of Maine are required to meet certain general education requirements as described below. Additional general requirements may be imposed by individual colleges, and each academic major imposes requirements specific to that area.

Demonstrated Writing Competency
Students are required to write throughout their academic careers and must demonstrate competency both at the introductory level and within their majors. To fulfill this requirements, students must:

1.

Complete ENG 101, College Composition, with a grade of C or better, or be excused from this course on the basis of a placement exam.

2.

Complete at least two writing-intensive courses, at least one of which must be within the academic major (see UST 300).

Ethics
Students are required to take a course or a series of courses placing substantial emphasis on discussion of ethical issues.

Human Values and Social Context

Students are required to complete 18 credits in this broad area, selected from lists of approved courses to satisfy each of the five sub- categories listed below. Courses that satisfy requirements in more than one sub-category may be counted in each appropriate sub- category.

1. Western cultural tradition
2. Social context and institutions
3. Cultural diversity and international perspectives
4. Population and the environment
5. Artistic and creative expression
6. Additional course from any of the above areas

Mathematics
Students are required to complete at least six credit hours in mathematics, including statistics and computer science. No more than three of the six credits hours may be in computer science.

Science
Students are required to complete two courses in the physical or biological sciences. This may be accomplished in two way:

1.

By completing two courses with laboratories in the basic or applied sciences.

2.

By completing one laboratory course in the basic or applied sciences, and a second approved course that incorporates a laboratory experience and stresses the applications of scientific knowledge.

Senior Capstone Experience
Students are required to complete an approved capstone experience within their major. The approved experience must be one in which the student draws upon and integrates the formal components of his or her undergraduate experience to perform at a professional level. Normally, the Capstone would conclude at the end of the student's senior year. Students should consult closely with their academic advisor to explore the range of options available for meeting this requirement. Students who have questions or concerns regarding the University of Maine's General Education Requirements should consult a University Studies advisor regarding course selection.

The University Studies program is an attractive degree program for me due to its flexibility and individualized style. I have several areas of interest and the Bachelor of University Studies will allow me the chance to take courses that will enhance both my career and personal interests

Applying to the program

Applicants must be high school graduates or equivalent (e.g. G.E.D.), and they must have completed at least 18 credit hours at the University of Maine or through acceptable transfer credits from accredited post-secondary institutions. These courses must be approved by a University Studies advisor, and show a minimum grade average of a "C" (2.0) or better. All applicants are expected to participate in an interview with a University Studies advisor to discuss their educational goals and plan their programs of study. High school transcripts and college transcripts should be available at the initial interview for evaluation purposes. Once the interview and 18 credit hours have been completed, the student will draft the degree plan and will submit an undergraduate admissions form to the University of Maine. Further guidelines for application are available through the Continuing Education Division and Summer Session. The student will be admitted only if his or her educational needs can be met by the scope of the courses offered through the Continuing Education Division.

The Bachelor of University Studies Degree at a distance

In addition to courses offered on the University of Maine campus and live at numerous locations throughout Maine; students may also enroll in courses on ITV, compressed video, or the Web. When taking courses at a distance, students must submit a "Multi-campus Notification Form" at time of registration and forward a grade transcript to the academic advisor for evaluation at the end of the semester.

Each student is encouraged to arrange telephone appointments prior to registration for academic approval. Advisors are available to the student anytime during the semester to answer academic questions.

The University Studies program allowed me flexibility and room for growth that no other University of Maine program could. I am not a number or a statistic, I am a real person and I am treated that way. The program capitalizes on my strengths and interests while minimizing trouble areas. The program increases self-esteem and confidence, and allows the non-traditional student to realize their dreams.
